Association between Amount of Alcohol Consumption and Serum Fasting Glucose Level in Korean Male in their 40s and 50s: The Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016?2018
Kim Ji-Hyun

Abstract
Background: Diabetes can be caused by environmental factors such as lifestyle choices, age, and sex. Recent Korean alcohol-related statistics suggested that males in their 40s and 50s had the highest rate of high-risk drinking. Alcohol is one cause of diabetes; thus, this study analyzed the effect of alcohol consumption on fasting glucose level used to diagnose diabetes, especially among male in their 40s and 50s.

Methods: Using data from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey (2016?2018), a composite sample logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association between the average daily alcohol consumption and fasting glucose level of 2,718 male in their 40s and 50s in Korea.

Results: Examination of the association between alcohol consumption and fasting glucose level with correction for age, body mass index, and waist circumference revealed that, compared to the non-drinker (0 g/day) group, the odds ratio of the heavy drinker (>30 g/day) increased by 1.954 (95% confidence interval 1.451?2.632).

Conclusion: The fasting glucose level of Korean males in their 40s and 50s was associated with alcohol consumption amount. In particular, an alcohol consumption exceeding the average of 30 g/day can further increase an impaired fasting glucose level. These results suggest that avoiding excessive drinking and abstaining from drinking can help prevent an impaired fasting glucose and the development of diabetes.
